Each bowl is turned from one block of walnut on a lathe, dried for a further month, then turned again to true it up after the wood has moved. The finish is a food-safe oil, wiped on and left to cure; there is no lacquer, so the surface can be re-oiled at home indefinitely.
Walnut varies from pale sap wood to near-black heartwood, sometimes within one bowl. The stack in the photograph shows the spread you can expect.
